Wellbeing
At our school, student wellbeing and learning go hand in hand. We want every student to feel safe, included and ready to learn. Whether your child needs help with their mental, emotional, social or physical wellbeing, we are here to help them thrive at school and in daily life.
How we support student wellbeing
Supporting each student’s mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing is part of everyday school life.
We do this through:
- teachers who help students feel welcome and included
- programs that support health, social skills, attendance and positive behaviour
- help for students who are new or changing year levels
- clear expectations for behaviour and respectful relationships
- staff who get to know each child and work closely with families
- developing health care plans for students
- open communication about wellbeing and support.

Grow Your Mind
At Charlestown, we strive to build and create a positive wellbeing culture. Grow Your Mind is a research based program that uses neuroscience and storytelling to create innovative and engaging mental health strategies to enhance the social and emotional wellbeing of children, educators and families. Its content has a strong awareness that wellbeing must be a whole of school approach and involve students, school staff as well as families in the process - something we embrace at our school.
We have developed school-based content designed around the research behind character strengths, compassion, emotional regulation, respectful relationships, growth mindset and resilience, all of which are in line with the NSW Wellbeing Framework for Schools. This framework is a result of an abundance of research that underpins their current focus: Connect, Succeed and Thrive.

The Anxiety Project
The Anxiety Project is a whole-school community approach to managing anxiety and building resilience in our students. It is a large-scale, evidence-based project, delivered through a series of cognitive behavioural lesson plans and teacher-led and parent-led conversational techniques. The project aims to build students resilience thinking skills with the goal that every child will be supported to achieve optimal mental health and wellbeing, and educational success.
Students across Kindergarten to year 6 engage in lessons learning about their brain and its functions in managing their emotions. There is a focus on teaching return to calm skills for when we are faced with challenge in all areas of life.
A key element to The Anxiety Project is we encourage our students to be brave and to ‘have a go’.
